Pest - Borer, Spiders

New Zealand is the ideal habitat and breeding ground for damaging pests, and by the time you notice them they may have already caused damage to your home or business. Protect your investment and health by removing these unwanted pests from your home or business.

BORER

Fly and Spider Control Ltd can treat Borer (also known as Bora or Woodworm) and other wood boring insects that affect older type buildings where untreated sapwood timber has been used (namely rimu, kahikatea, matai and kauri).

Borer is often seen in the exterior of painted weatherboards usually on the south side of the house and in floorboards and joists as Borer prefer cooler damper areas where the relative humidity is higher.

 Borer Bora Woodworm Control

Adult females lay eggs on bare timber or in old flight holes. These eggs hatch after 4-5wks and the larvae bore through the wood at random, coming nearer to the surface when ready to pupate (usually after 3-4yrs as larvae). During pupation the larvae changes in form to an adult which then emerges from the wood leaving a small round hole about 1-1.5mm in diameter.

Our technician will apply a residual treatment to all wood surfaces of your home, which will continue to kill the borer beetle as they emerge throughout the flight season, Our treatment is not a cure but a control. The breeding cycle is broken but the borer will still emerge from the timber until all the pupae have hatched.

In some situations if timber has been severely weakened (ie. external weatherboards which tend to be infested from the inside) then the affected boards should be replaced with treated timber.

SPIDERS

Spider Control

Biting and venomous spiders (namely the Katipo/Redback and the Whitetailed spiders) are a real risk to the health of humans and animals. Fly and Spider Control Ltd has spider pest control services to combat these harmful spiders, as well as all other less dangerous New Zealand spiders.

The Whitetailed Spider (Lampona cylindrata & Lampona murina) is a fine featured spider that has a dark grey/brown body, brown striped legs and a distinctive cream/white tip on its tail, sometimes with additional creamy white marks on the body.

The bite of a Whitetailed Spider is venomous and painful though not usually dangerous. Sometimes however, the bite may become infected by bacteria carried by the spider, leading to swelling, itchiness and occasionally welts, blistering or local ulceration - known as necrotising arachnidism. Debate continues about the involvement of the Whitetailed Spider bite in cases of severe ulcerative skin lesions, as usually no direct evidence of a spider bite is available.

Fly and Spider Control Ltd's spider elimination process involves the treatment of the exterior of the house, ceiling/roof spaces and other interiors using environmental friendly products and providing up to 12 months protection against the Whitetailed Spider entering your house.

There are numerous other harmless spiders in New Zealand which produce extensive webbing in and around buildings that can be unsightly and difficult to remove. A treatment of internal and external areas where these spiders live and spin webs will prevent the need to remove the webbing.
